Customer Profile:
Hi there, I'm Fred, 20 years young and currently work for the Nottingham Graphic Designers 'Attitudes Design'. I generally have a love for a vast range of music and it usually all comes down to my current emotion. However, if ever i'm listening to the radio or browsing though YouTube (typically everyday) for some tunes, Britpop is always a winner! I especially love Oasis and Blur, so any news and gossip concerning them will have my hooked. I also look for up and coming events when browsing through music magazines, as i am a huge fan of live music and am always interested in hearing of these!
Hiya! My name is Ally, and I'm currently half way through my gap year, so been traveling around Europe for about 8 months now. Being on the go constantly i like to plug in to my ipod and listen to my music, a majority of the time listening to my favourite genre, Britpop. However, what i would really love to see more of is a quality Britpop music magazine. Because, still, there are very limited magazines out there on the market that have a main focus on such a classic musical genre. Not cool! My favourite articles to read are any exclusive interviews with Britpop artists. Also, anything to do with Liam Gallagher and I'm there!!

Theories Used In The Media:
There are some specific ‘theories’ of which are often used/considered in The Media. Some examples of these would be the 'Audience Theory' which is an element of thinking that developed within academic literary theory and cultural studies.
The 'Two Step Flow' this means that we are much more likely to be affected by the media if we discussed it with others. Our opinion on this media is discussed and disseminated and then affected by how we then see this.
The 'Hypodermic Syringe Theory' is that The Media is like a syringe which 'injects' ideas, attitudes and beliefs into the audience. Often seen as unchallenged and passive.
There are four functions of The Media on the audience, which was specified by C. Wright Mill. These include,
- Escapism, providing people with an alternative if they have somehow failed.
- To give instructions on how to achieve their goals.
- To give people aspiration and goals to look forward to.
- To give individuals an identity.
When producing my final magazine cover/DPS/contents page, I will be considering all of these above theories and try and include some, if not all of these four functions. Because I would like to aim to provide my readers with the intended aspiration and a sense of escapism.
Keeping in mind still that over recent years The Media has significantly improved. With technology, at least, doubling every year, we now have such a vast selection of media. Allowing us to have a choice and be more selective with what we choose to consume.
Leading up to this, we therefore have an influence on what media is produced because of what is most on demand.
It’s all about ‘how’ we consume The Media, interpret and interact with it.

Questionnaire Results:
By looking at these results it is clearly evident that there are individual factors that my sample group (made up of my t.a) would prefer to see in my music magazine front cover/DPS/contents page. Taking account these results, as my main aim is to design and create a magazine that appeals most to a specified target audience.
-The masthead/title of my music magazine will be 'BritScene', which is both relevant to my musical genre and also well-thought out and unique.
- I could include an article based on the Britpop band The Beatles.
- My double page spread will be based on an interview with a Britpop artist (possibly The Beatles).
- I will focus more on the magazine Rolling Stones and how it is put together, the kind of colour scheme's, font's, layout's etc. that they include, as a main source of inspiration for my own magazine 'BritScene'.
- My target audience appeared to prefer my 'cloud logo' which includes the British flag. Although, at the time i decided that i too preferred that particular logo design, i have since then, explored my options further with the creation of my logo and decided upon a different design altogether (a union jack 'B' or the star design). However, i could always use this cloud design as a 'back-up logo' if i need to in the future.
- I will price my magazine at £3.50, as this is what my t.a said they would prefer to pay for a quality music magazine, such as 'BritScene'.
- Overall, Britpop was most listened to by my target audience, which is great, proving all ages and both genders in present time still enjoy listening to this musical genre! This suggests that my magazine would sell well and be quite popular.
- By looking at my results, i have found that Britpop is 'not for just the older generation'. As a majority of my sample group said that they 'disagree' with that statement and that Britpop is a genre taht deserves to be appreciated by people of all ages.
- My results clearly show that Britpop is played over the radio at least once a week.
- Magazine subscriptions were not very popular amongst my sample group, therefore i will not offer my t.a a subscription offer in my contents page or front cover.
-Overall, the colour palette of red/white/blue was the most preferred. These colours all relate to my focus on 'British' music, because the colours are all featured in the Union Jack flag. Therefore, the right message will be conveyed- British music is best!
- The font type i will be including in my music magazine will be the fourth font type, shown in my pie graph. This was a personal favourite of mine also, therefore i will happily be using this as a featured font style. Sticking to only one or two fonts so that my magazine does not appear too unorganized and unprofessional.
Questionnaire:
This is my questionnaire, of which i have given to a sample group of 15 people, between the ages of 15 and 50; whom i felt would fit my magazine target audience. The purpose of this was so that i could get primary information, based on my target audience's preferences (which is important, as this will be what makes my magazine appealing to my specified t. a) and draw the correct conclusions as to how i will be constructing my magazine cover. I will be soon creating various pie graphs based on the final answers i got from these handouts, this will be presented so it can be clearly read.
The Advantages of a Questionnaire:
- A questionnaire can usually be completed anonymously, therefore, more 'sensitive material' can be explored and completed in private. Also allowing my target audience to answer these questions asked more honestly and feel more relaxed.
- Generally this is a quick, easy and accurate way of collecting primary information from a selected variety of age's/ gender/ interest's etc.
- The responses are gathered in a standardised way, so questionnaires are usually more objective because all of the questions being asked are all the same; therefore, it is much easier to conduct some good conclusions.
The Disadvantages of a Questionnaire:
- It's usually made quite difficult to explore the more complex issues and opinions because of the limited depth of response, even with open questions.
- The respondent could possibly misunderstand a question being asked or deliberately invalidate the questionnaire.
- A deficiently chosen sample can make the questionnaire to be of limited use. Self-selecting samples can also contaminate data.
- It's made quite difficult to ascertain the validity or truth of the respondent's answers as your not personally asking these questions, as i you would in an interview for example.
Inspiration:
The genre Britpop includes characteristic pop music performed by a variety of British bands of the mid 1990s. Here in this video, i have an example of a very well known and successful Britpop band called Oasis.
